EN 16005 Swing door safety requirements
Vulnerable door users:
There must be no contact with the moving door leaf when a significant proportion of door users are elderly, infirm, disabled or young children.
Normal pedestrian access:
A defined portion of the door leaf from the leading edge must be protected based on the width and speed of the door (Annex G).
Hinge area protection:
Must be provided on all swing doors, even low energy doors. Danger points presenting a finger trap hazard must be protected up to a height of at least 1.9m from the floor.
Full door safety is mandatory:
If the space between the fully opened door and adjacent wall is <50cm or if the door opens into a busy cross traffic area.
Risk assessment:
On site risk assessment must consider the prevention of contact between the door leaf & vulnerable door users and the safety measures employed on the door to protect them.
Safety Zone Position:
To ensure EN 16005 compliance an approved test box must be detected in the protected area as illustrated in Annex C.
What do you need for EN 16005 compliance?
- SSS-5 swing door safety sensor: The SSS-5 features the industry’s only 1-meter-wide safety zone, allowing you to exceed EN 16005 with a single cost-effective sensor module. It also delivers twice the safety coverage compared to similar products on the market.
- FP60 finger protector: The FP60 mechanical finger protector safeguards the entire hinge area up to and above the mandatory 1.9 meters from the floor surface. Designed for both internal and external doors, it exceeds EN 16005, provides peace of mind, and is the right choice for all your swing door projects.
- ADSA approved EN16005 test box: Our ADSA approved EN 16005 test box is an essential part of every installers tool kit. An approved test box makes it easy to ensure that the pedestrian safety zone is positioned correctly – a vital step for every EN 16005 compliant swing door installation.
